Hydrangeas in autumn: what to prune and what to leave

Do not prune every hydrangea the same way. Find the plant name first. Flower colour does not determine the pruning method, and a standard needs its trained shape considered too.

Why the species matters

Hard pruning of macrophylla can remove wood that would carry future flowers. Paniculata and arborescens, which includes Annabelle, are treated differently, generally in spring. The RHS pruning guide separates these groups.

If the label is missing, check the order or seek identification before cutting. “White hydrangea” is not a sufficient identification. A flower photograph helps but may not settle the question.

An autumn inspection

Photograph the whole plant and record its shape. Look at broken branches, supports and places where water remains after rain. Tidying the surrounding area is different from substantially reducing the crown.

Before shaping, answer three questions: which species is it, what shape should remain, and which wood is alive? If uncertain, obtain guidance for that specimen first.

Catalogue choices

For our paniculata assortment, confirm the actual cultivar available. A group name does not promise the same size or flowers on every specimen.

Annabelle and Pink Annabelle offer different colour directions. Compare supplied size and available space as well as flower photographs. For a standard, ask about maintaining its crown; never apply low shrub pruning to the entire trained plant.

Planning the space

Mark the intended crown outline and check clearance beside the path. Make sure you can reach every shrub for care before deciding quantities.

Must faded flowers be removed immediately?

There is no universal rule. Find the correct group in the RHS guide above and distinguish deadheading from shortening branches.

Request confirmation of the specimen and discuss delivery and planting. Include location, light and available space. Planting dates depend on soil and weather conditions.
