Ornamental grasses in autumn: what to leave and when to cut

Do not cut every ornamental grass during the autumn clean-up. Identify the plant and notice what remains green. Dry stems can contribute to the winter garden.

Two different approaches

Deciduous grasses are generally cut in spring before new shoots develop. Many evergreen grasses and sedges, including Carex, need dead material removed while green foliage stays. The RHS guide explains the distinction.

In Moldova, follow weather and plant development rather than a fixed date from another climate. Keep labels: “ornamental grass” is not enough information to choose a pruning method.

Catalogue examples

Miscanthus Little Zebra, Pennisetum Hameln and Carex morrowii offer different silhouettes and should not share one clean-up rule.

They are not a ready-made combination for every site. Check each plant's light and moisture requirements. Confirm cultivar dimensions and supplied size before planning spacing.

Beside a path

Measure the border width and preserve a clear route. View the space from the path and from a window. A strong silhouette may work better slightly behind the edge.

Your autumn checklist

Photograph each group, keep the names, note stems obstructing the path and record observations by species. Use the photographs in spring to decide what to adjust.

Does a brown autumn clump mean the plant is dead?

Not necessarily. Identify the species and its seasonal cycle before removing it.

Should Carex be cut like Miscanthus?
