Watering conifers in autumn and after planting

Water autumn conifers according to the soil, not a fixed weekday. Newly planted specimens need separate attention from established trees. A light shower does not necessarily tell you whether the root ball is moist.

Check before reaching for the hose

Examine soil below the surface at the root ball and beside it. Water the root zone slowly when dry; investigate drainage if water remains standing. Following a dry autumn, evergreens may need watering before the ground freezes. These principles are explained by University of Maryland Extension.

Choose several checking points rather than judging a whole hedge by its first plant. The useful record is the condition of the soil, not simply whether irrigation ran that day.

Set up a practical routine

Keep a short record of the planting date, plant name, soil checks, recent rain or watering, and changes in foliage. With drip irrigation, check each outlet: a running system does not prove that every plant receives water. Compare the last specimen in a row with the first.

How many litres does one thuja need?

Start with the size of the delivered root ball and check the result in the soil. A neighbour's schedule cannot account for your ground or recent rainfall. Avoid treating a small plant and a large specimen as identical.

What if foliage turns yellow?

Should I water after rain?

Check the soil first. Recording rainfall helps, but does not replace checking the root ball.
